XDCAM Disc Facts & Information
Did you know...
XDCAM discs have an extremely high transfer rate: The XDCAM Professional Disc’s data transfer rate is 72 Mb/s from a single optical head unit or 144 Mb/s on a dual head deck, which provides stable recording and playback of high bit rate data.
XDCAM is the largest capacity (23.3GB or 50GB data capacity) optical disc available. The large capacity of the XDCAM Professional Disc media lets you to make long, high quality recordings. 23GB XDCAM discs give a video recording time of 45 to 85 minutes (recording time is dependent on the bit rate chosen for recording).
Which XDCAM disc is used for HD recording with XDCAM? The same Sony PFD23A Professional Disc™, FUJI PD711 Disc, Maxell Disc or TDK Disc used for standard definition recording is also used for HD recording.
Sony, Fuji PD711, Maxell and TDK’s new XDCAM Professional Disc recording media is a 12cm (5 inch) single-sided, rewritable optical disc with a capacity of 23.3GB. By achieving a track pitch of 0.32μm with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and by utilizing blue-laser technology, the disc media is able to attain high-density recording almost 5 times that of DVD using red-laser.
The XDCAM
Professional Disc is a new nonlinear recording method.
The Sony developed XDCAM Professional Disc PFD23A is a single-sided (the 50 GB
disc is dual layered) optical disc
that uses high tech blue violet laser technology to create very large high
resolution recordings. The 23 GB disc is only 4 5/8" in diameter (like CDs or
DVDs). In creating the XDCAM system and recording medium Sony has truly produced
a "next generation" video that will be the industry standard for years to come.
The XDCAM Professional Disc system is a very flexible medium which can accommodate a variety of data formats. Through its use of optical disc technology, it allows a variety of many different video (or data) formats to be recorded. You can record in many different ways: video streams, audio streams, and metadata. You can even record approximately 500MB of standard data from computers such as .ai Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop files.
X-Ray, Heat
and humidity resistant XDCAM optical discs are a very reliable, durable and
re-usable recording medium. Excellent for long term storage needs.
The XDCAM format is ideal for continuous use and re-use because it has no
mechanical contact during recording or playback. The XDCAM Professional
Disc media resists dust, shock, and scratches, and it comes enclosed in a dust
resistant cartridge case.
All XDCAM Disc manufacturers have conformed to the same specifications for these optical discs and so each uses the same label and case insert shape and size.
The Sony XDCAM 23GB discs have a flexible platform large capacity optical disc high transfer rate of 72 Mbps on a single head unit and 144 Mbps on a dual head deck.
These optical discs feature quick random direct access and are very reliable and stable for high performance under tough environmental conditions and extreme temperature. Durable professional re-usable media that has outstanding picture quality of MPEG IMX/DVCAM format recording, with flexible metadata recording as well.
Sony's Professional Disc recording media is a 5 inch (12cm) rewritable optical disc which can record in single, side (23GB) or two dual layers (50GB). By achieving a track pitch of 0.32ìm, with state of the art manufacturing technology and by utilizing blue-laser technology, the disc media can attain high density recording more than 5 times (23GB) or 10 times (50GB) than that of a DVD (4.7GB) using red-laser technology.
